Biography

John Martinek's drawings, paintings, prints, and collages have been exhibited in numerous venues, including solo shows at Iowa State University, in Ames Iowa, at Grinnell College, in Grinnell, Iowa, at the Tayyare Culture Center in Bursa, Turkey, and at the Baykus Gallery in Bursa Turkey.

Creating art, traveling, teaching, and writing are all important parts of Martinek's life and work. In 1999 he was a visiting instructor in printmaking at Grinnell College in Iowa. From 1996 to 1999 he taught printmaking, drawing, and painting at Uludag University in Bursa, Turkey. In 1995 Martinek studied for a month at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia in Venice, Italy before embarking on a four month exploration of Europe, Morocco, and Turkey. During this journey, he completed a large portfolio of ink and gouache landscape drawings. In 1994 he traveled for a month in Africa visiting Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Mali, recording his experiences in writing and photographic work. Martinek has given public lectures both in the United States and in Turkey.

John Martinek was born in New Orleans in 1968. He recieved his BA in Art from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois in 1990. In 1996 he received an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa.

Currently, Martinek resides in Coralville, Iowa where he is the owner and operator of Martinek Building and Design, a company which specializes in finish carpentry, cabinetry, and fine woodworking. He continues to work on paintings, prints, and drawings in his studio, and travels to Turkey almost every summer to make art, travel, and visit family and friends.
